About our apprenticeships

Apprenticeships have changed

From May 2017, apprenticeships at East Sussex County Council changed due to the national apprenticeship levy.

This means that a certain proportion of our vacancies have apprenticeship vocational training standards attached to them.

The rules around what classifies as an apprenticeship have changed and the levels of training available for our employees now ranges from Level 2 to Level 7. Each of these levels has an equivalent in education levels ranging from GCSE to bachelor’s or master’s degree.

We are committed to staff growing their careers and accessing this training free of charge.

Different types of apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are now suitable for a much wider selection of vocational roles – from business administration and care through eventually to careers in occupational therapy, social work and teaching among many others.

Apprentice training is available for both new and existing staff:

  • Entry Level – For people new to the workplace who are undertaking a year-long placement and a Level 2 qualification. These roles are paid at an apprenticeship salary scale.
  • Professional Development Plan – For both new and existing staff who will be undertaking an apprenticeship standard and gaining a vocational qualification. These positions are paid at the existing salary scales for the role.

An apprenticeship standard shows what an apprentice will be doing and the skills they need. The list is growing and the current apprenticeship standards are available on GOV.UK.


Becoming an apprentice

Is it mandatory for new staff?

Some roles at the Council will require you to undertake a vocational qualification. However, if you already have the required or a related qualification, you will not need to undertake any further training.

And in some roles, you can elect to do an apprenticeship: if there is an apprenticeship standard or framework that is related to your role, then there is funding available for you to access this training. All training would need to be agreed by your line manager.

Who can apply

Apprenticeships are now open to all ages and to existing and new members of staff, including those with higher educational qualifications.

How to apply

  • If you are looking for an apprenticeship at the Council, then search for a job with apprenticeship in the job description.
  • If you already work with us and you would like to undertake an apprenticeship standard, then please talk with your manager.

Costs and salaries

We provide the training for staff through our apprenticeship levy contribution and there are no costs to you or your team’s budget.

You will not take a pay cut if you undertake apprenticeship training. Whatever pay scale you are employed at will apply throughout your training.


How we support you and your manager

Training for apprentices and support for our managers

Apprenticeship vocational training differs according to the type of role. It combines practical training in a job with study.

If you are undertaking an apprenticeship standard, you’ll:

  • work alongside experienced staff
  • gain job-specific skills
  • earn a wage and get holiday pay
  • get time for study related to your role – you’ll spend 20% of your time on training and learning.

If you manage staff who are undertaking an apprenticeship standard, we’ll help you manage this time commitment within your team.
